Reprimanded Exeter Cathedral Dean leaves alongside Canon Devon Live

“More challenges and changes are continuing to rock Exeter Cathedral following the a
ouncement that its Dean and another key leading figure have left.
Today, it was a
ounced the Very Rev Jonathan Draper will retire as Dean at the end of August. This week, Canon Victoria Thurtell also resigned from her post of Precentor with immediate effect, and is looking forward to a new ministry in due course.
On Tuesday, Devon Live reported how Exeter Cathedral is facing a significant deficit and to save money it is looking to reduce its number of staff. This year, it is facing a deficit in its operational budget alone of around u00a3175,000, and is actively trying to raise u00a34.2m to fund the maintenance and cost of ru
ing the historic and iconic building.
Details of the cathedral’s deficit hit the headlines last September when the Bishop of Exeter, Rt Revd Robert Atwell, blasted the Dean in a report, or ‘charge’, following the first wide ranging review of its kind since 1959.
It led to a series of directions from Bishop Robert which include the shelving of Exeter cathedral’s plans for a Roman bath house visitor centre for at least five years while it addresses its “acute” financial situation. His criticism of the Dean included having only understood the gravity of the financial situation of the cathedral towards the end of 2015; and not “listen to advice, even from senior colleagues”.
Today the Dean described the decision as having taken “considerable thought and reflection”. Rev Jonathan, who celebrated his 65th birthday last month, is currently on leave this week with his wife Maggie, and on his return will be on sabbatical.”
