The Olympic Torch comes to the island

 

The Olympic Torch arrived at Yarmouth making it's way to The Needles to descend the chair lift to Alum Bay, then onto Gunville, through Newport & along Fairlee Road, where these images were taken, to the Medina High School and then onto East Cowes before returning to the mainland at Southampton

The torch arrived at Yarmouth on board a Wightlink ferry, with its vehicle convoy forming up before beginning its journey towards The Needles at precisely 1.04pm

The first torchbearer began their run on Madeira Lane in Totland at 1.08pm, with several bearers then running with the Flame through to York Lane until 1.23pm

The next torchbearer began their run at The Needles Park at Alum Bay at 1.27pm. During the time that the Flame is at The Needles, it was carried down the chairlift to the seafront before returning to the top at 1.58pm

The torch convoy then make its way to Yarmouth where the next person to carry the Flame started their turn on River Road in Yarmouth at 2.14pm. The torch was carried through the town, going through Quay Street, Pier Street, the High Street, Baskett's Lane, Tennyson Road and The Mount

At 2.23pm it was taken towards Carisbrooke where the next torchbearer carried the Flame at 2.38pm on Gunville Road. The torch was then be carried by several bearers all the way from Gunville Road, through Carisbrooke High Street and on through Newport town centre, where it head down the High Street towards Coppins Bridge.  From there it was be carried along Fairlee Road to Medina College at 3.17pm, which was hosting the Isle of Wight Primary School Games

The torch began its final leg of its stay on the Island as it headed towards East Cowes. The convoy went to Osborne House where a torchbearer ran through the grounds before coming out onto The Avenue at 3.50pm. It was then carried down onto York Avenue and Well Road before finishing at Red Funnel
