Introduction

12,600 people signed up for the 2009 Walk the Wight this year which offers a choice of the Flat Walk from Sandown to Shide - 8 ml, Bembridge to Carisbrooke - 12½ ml, Carsibrooke to Alum Bay - 14 ml or for the complete walk from Bembridge to Alum Bay - 26½.

Weather conditions were far from favourable with overcast skies leading to a torrential downpour early in the morning, then clearing to blue skies which lasted along the Tennyson Trail to Mottistone Down when cloud once again moved in. As soon as Brook Down was reached, the ferocity of the wind coming off the sea was experienced which abated slightly at Freshwater Bay but across Tennyson Down and West High Down, rain moved in with increased wind speeds and gusty conditions making the going extremely hard going.  The sun made a welcome return as we walked along the final stage into the Needles Park at Alum Bay.
