A circular walk along the cliff top path from Whale Chine towards Grange before heading inland to Brighstone returning via Yafford

The route description is my recollection of the journey and, whilst every care has been taken to ensure that it is accurate, it may not necessarily be an exact or complete description of the overall walk. Please use this description together with the relevant map to plan your journey. 

The Walk

1.   Whale Chine

(SZ 469-784)

Turn left at the end of the car park and follow the edge of Whale Chine to the cliff edge. Turn right and continue along the cliff edge past the Coastguard Cottages at Atherfield Point, scene of a recent minor cliff fall, to Shepherd's Chine.  Turn right and follow the path down steps passing a small, then turn left to reach the mouth of the chine at the shore.

  

2.   Shepherd's Chine

(SZ 448-798 1.8 ml)

Turn right up a steep slope and follow the path along the edge of the cliff top bearing right along the edge of Cowleaze Chine and then left to return to the cliff top.  Turn right and continue along the cliff top for approximately 1½ mile passing Barnes High to reach the 'whale seat'.  Turn right across the stile and through a field crossing a second stile into Cliff Lane to reach the Military Road.  Cross straight over and follow the road through Marsh Green to reach Wicken Hill Lane.  Turn left and follow the road for approximately 50 yards and turn right crossing a stile and continue across the field keeping the fence to the left.  Cross the stile and follow the path behind Waytes Court crossing three stiles and a footbridge.  Bear right and follow the lane to reach the outskirts of Brighstone by it's church.

 

3.   Brighstone

(SZ 429-826 4.8 ml)

Turn right and walk along the road passing Bakehouse Cottage on the left and bear right into Broad Lane.  Turn left crossing a stile and turn right following the path along the edge of the field keeping the hedge to the right.  Follow the path past the gate on the right and bear left follow the path along the edge of the field keeping the ditch to the right.  Cross the stile and continue along the path through the next field keeping the hedge to the left.  Continue across the field, ignoring the path on the left, following the edge of the field.  Turn left across the stile and continue along the edge of the field keeping the hedge to the left.  Cross the stile and continue along the road passing the entrance to a freshwater fishing lake on the right. At the left bend in the road continue straight on across the stile following the path along the edge of the stream.  Turn right across a wide bridge and then left across two stiles (or use the gate) and follow the path through the field keeping the hedge to the left.  Cross the stile and turn right following the road at Yafford.

  

4.   Yafford

(SZ 447-818 6.3 ml)

Turn left at the road junction (pond on the right) and continue along the road passing a long narrow pond on the left passing Yafford House on the right. Continue straight on passing Doctors Lane on the left and follow the road, Samber Hill, around to the right.  Continue along the road for approximately 400 yards and continue straight on along the wide track, at the left hand bend in the road.  Turn left at the path junction and follow the path over Samber Hill turning right to join Atherfield Road.  Turn left along Dungewood Lane and follow the road around to the left.  Turn right across the stile in the hedge and walk straight across the field.  Continue across the path junction keeping the hedge to the right.  Cross the stile in the hedge, bear left, then right, and cross a second stile.  Continue straight across the field and follow the path around the edge of Warren Hill.  Turn right at the path junction and then left, and continue straight across the field.  Cross the double stile separated by a footbridge and turn left.  Continue across the field keeping to the left.  Cross the stile and follow the narrow path with the raised bank to a pond on the right.  Cross the footbridge and continue across the field.  Bear right and follow the path across the next field bearing left at the fence.  Continue along the path to Gladices and turn right at the next path. Follow the grass track and turn right into Atherfield Road.  Follow the road for approximately 400 yards and turn left down a gravel track which leads back to the Military Road.  Turn left and walk along the grass verge on the side of the road for approximately 600 yards and, turning right, cross the road into Whale Chine car park.
